Summary of Math Project
The college math project was a project based on exploring
how to calculate the costs of college for the four years that we would attend
college. I calculated the cost for Western State Colorado University as well as
Colorado University of Boulder. I calculated the cost of college for future
years based off of trends in percentage of increase from previous years. We
found the total tuition cost as well as the total cost (this included room and
board as well as extra fees the colleges have). I found that Western State
Colorado University was much cheaper than Colorado University. Along with the
cost calculated of college we created repayment plans based on realistic
repayment plans that exist currently. This project opened my eyes to just how expensive
college is. Between Repayment Plans and calculating tuition costs this project
has greatly influenced and given me useful experience that I can apply in the
future.
Math Response
Math Response
1. Western State University is located in
Gunnison which is in central Colorado, more west than east. Western State
college of Colorado is a 4-year public college. University of Colorado, Boulder
is in northern Colorado. University of Colorado Boulder is a 4-year public
school.
2. The r2 values were
slightly different between Western State and University of Colorado. The r2
value for University of Colorado is .9918. The r2 value for Western
State was .9511.
3. The average percent increase in
tuition over the past ten years at Western State college was 1.0874 % from 2012
to 2002. The average percent increase in tuition over the past ten years at
Colorado University of Boulder was 1.0822. I think this percent does matter
depending on the school; however this does not mean that the more expensive
school will have a higher percent increase. The percent increase is only based
off of the raise in price between years.
4. The anticipated tuition for the four
years I would go to Western State College is 1.05273. The anticipated tuition
for the four years I would go to Colorado University of Boulder is 1.05107.
5. At the University of Colorado Boulder
the years where the highest percentage of increase occurs from 2002 to 2003. At
western State College the years where the highest percentage of increase occurs
from 2011 to 2012. The reason which I think that University of Colorado had the
biggest percentage of increase is because of the fact that in these years we
had the strongest and best economy in which the range of the data I compared.
At Western State I would assume it would have the greatest percentage increase
at the same time. Western State increased most form 2011 to 2012 which is weird
considering the fact that we are still coming out of a financial crisis. I think
that maybe the size of the schools made a difference in how they reacted to
different scenarios.
6. At University of Colorado Boulder the
tuition for all four years would be 44001.02 dollars. The tuition of college
for all four years at Western State University is 27595.04 dollars.
7. I chose the standard graduated
repayment plan for both colleges and for University of Colorado Boulder I found
the total to be 64045.98 dollars. Western State College had a total of 40166.06
dollars. Both of these university are four year public schools, however CU
Boulder is much more expensive
8. University of Colorado Boulder is a
20044.97 dollar federal interest amount. The total interest cost for Western
State College is 12571.06 dollars. The values are different and 7500 dollars is
a lot but it isn’t a huge amount so I don’t think this fact alone would
persuade form one college to another.
9. Western State College was less
expensive than University of Colorado Boulder. Both schools are four year
public colleges. In tuition I would save 16405.98 dollars. In interest going to
Western State only saves roughly 7500 dollars. In total cost with the standard
graduated plan you save 23879.92 dollars. The amount of money I would save by
going to Western State would be a lot but at the same time it isn’t so much
that it would make my mine up for me. I am definitely aware of the price but it
isn’t the biggest factor in choosing between the two schools.
10. Well I think some factors that could
come into play with the tentative tuition cost is that in Gunnison, a smaller
city there isn’t much competition for business so prices in general for things
will be more expensive. If I lived in Gunnison I would also buy a ski pass
because of how close it is to great skiing. In Boulder I more than likely would
not because skiing is so far out of the way.
11. Well I have learned that College is very
expensive and it is not an easy choice to pick between two colleges. I think
that money is huge part of it but I also think that you should choose a college
based on what you think the college is capable of teaching you. I have a new
respect for the challenges college bound students have to face. I feel as
though I am very confident in graphing linear equations. I also feel as though
I have become better at interpreting data and coming to conclusions on that
data. This project was very helpful is building these skills. I compared two
schools that I have interest in after I graduate from high school and looking
at these schools and calculating the price of tuition has been a great
experience. I found the tuition cost, cost with a loan, prices of room and
board. Over all I am still undecided on the school I want to go to but this
project definitely opened my eyes to some more factors I had not considered
before.
